Reading comprehension strategies

Reading Comprehension Strategies

Comprehension should always be the chief concern when teaching reading. What good is reading if the child has no understanding of what is read? In this article I will outline key reading comprehension strategies and show how they should be used.

Before reading you should allow children to make predictions about what they think the book will be about based on either the title or the picture on the front cover of the book. Children can also make predictions about what they think will happen based on what they read on the back cover of a book. Discuss with them their predictions and ask them to justify why their predictions are reasonable based on what they have read. Create a prediction chart that shows titles such as: WHAT WE PREDICTWHAT HAPPENED IN THE STORY. List everything students predict will happen under the "WHAT WE PREDICT" column. Once the story has been read you can write what actually happened in the story in the "WHAT HAPPENED IN THE STORY" column. Students should be allowed to adjust predictions so the "WHAT WE PREDICT" column can be changed as the story is read. Older readers must be taught that while they are reading they should be looking out for the setting of the story, that is, the time and place the

Allowing children to do research on a topic before it is presented in a story format is highly effective for improving reading comprehension. This strategy however, works better with older readers. Children will feel more in tune with the content of the text if they are allowed to develop previous knowledge.

Another reading comprehension strategy that I have found to be highly effective is to do vocabulary work before hand. You can introduce children to new words. Have them break them up into syllables. Put the new words on flashcards. You can also have children find out the meaning of these words in the dictionary, with all this groundwork, once you get to the text it will be smooth sailing.

After reading, children can do written and oral retelling of the story. Engage children in answering questions. These may be in the form of traditional written comprehension questions or oral comprehension questioning. I mentioned using research as a pre-reading strategy but this can also be done after reading.

Encourage children to act out stories in groups with each child taking turns playing characters from the book.

Completing a story map is a good activity for students to do after reading as they get a chance to summarize and to zero in on what happened at different points in the story. A good story map is one that asks students to tell what happened at the beginning, middle and the end of the story.

Make an art-literature connection by having students draw and paint or color their favorite scenes. They can also write something about what they have drawn so that a writing connection is also made.

Reading books versus watching dvds

Reading Books Versus Watching DVDs

It’s the age old dilemma. Should I read the book or wait for the DVD? In the land of business and entertainment, which rarely go hand in hand unless you’re actually in the entertainment business, this question is vital. Marketing entertainment is not an easy calling. With so many illustriously wonderful ideas floating around out there, knowing how to market entertainment is that sells and presents the public with unique and fresh quality is nearly a gift. Often the best ideas come from no-names who are trying to break into the business, but marketing entertainment without a name behind them is a serious risk. A name at least carries a reputation, which in itself will sell even when the material is marginal.

Yet the entertainment business is so huge, encompassing everything from books to DVDs to Hollywood movies, that marketing entertainment should be a breeze. All you need is a good idea and some flashy imagery, right? The answer is not that simple. While flashy imagery certainly brings attention to a good idea, it can not be the end all to the entertainment business. Entertainment means just that, something which engages the mind and hopefully the emotional spirit of human existence. The best entertainment makes us cry and want and fills us with a need to make a difference in the world. This seems like more than mere entertainment.

When marketing entertainment, your choice between books or DVDs is one of the most vital stages of your business decisions, as it will shape your entire marketing plan as well as your target audience. Since the entertainment business is a multi billion dollar a year industry without the inclusion of Hollywood stars, their salaries, and the average big name glitz and glamour, marketing entertainment can really pay off even for the movie rental store on the corner. Americans love entertainment, and those considering the entertainment industry as a personal business should consider all angles before making the final leap.

Reading the book is my ultimate personal choice. When you read the book, you get so much more detail and thought behind each expression. Writers who are able to create strong, compelling, visually stimulating story from their imagination are in possession of a fine gift that can give for generations. The book industry offers such a complete and varied platform for marketers that the possibilities are literally endless. Don’t be fooled, the book industry is just as competitive as the DVD industry. It is always an unfortunate failure when a budding entrepreneur chooses the book industry as opposed to the DVD industry based on the belief that the book industry is less competitive and presents an easier market. The process associated with keeping strong titles stocked and presenting a well rounded (even for genre specific businesses) hot list is mind boggling. Don’t get discouraged, it’s far from impossible, but the book industry is not a fluffy version of the entertainment industry.

The DVD industry is also highly competitive, even for those who choose to market for specific genres. Just because they made a movie out of it doesn’t mean that it should take up space on your website or be slapped up on your shelves along with the “real” films. Alternatively, just because you’ve never heard of anyone in the cast doesn’t mean it’s not a compelling, original, smart, and should see before you die film that didn’t get off the ground in the theatres simply because it was lacking a big name. The DVD industry requires a delicate tempering of honoring the art with meeting public demand.

Marketing entertainment is undoubtedly a difficult but worthwhile endeavor. Not to mention it is definitely a while mess of fun. For anyone who is well educated about what they are about to leap into, marketing entertainment can be an ultimately rewarding experience, both financially speaking and personally speaking. The entertainment industry offers an abundance of personal reward. If you’re hanging on the fence between books and DVDs, and you have a clear understanding of what each entails, the best advice is to go with your passion. Passion is what brings people through the dry moments. There will be dry moments. But as those dry moments turn to dust, there are lush moments waiting just beyond that. Few industries offer the same type of fun based business opportunities as marketing entertainment.

Reading between the lines of pet insurance

Reading Between The Lines Of Pet Insurance

Pets have become an important aspect in the life of every human being. These animal wonders have given a lot of happiness and companion moments that other individuals are not capable of. The loyalty they have shown to their human friends is quite impressive. There are even numerous accounts wherein lives are salvaged due to the efforts of pets.

That is why it is only proper to reward them with as much comfort and security an individual can offer. Pet insurance is a sure fire thing of doing so. But before engaging in financial negotiations with the firm of your choice you should prepare yourself with a certain degree of knowledge so that talks can run smoothly.

First and foremost you have to advocate for your friend pet in the best manner possible and you can start by knowing what really fits his needs especially if conditions that may extend for a long period of time is on the table. Determine if your animal companion is suited to have a comprehensive insurance plan or if a discount plan may do the job for him. Discounted plans involve fees that have to be secured annually so that discounts from veterinary and other miscellaneous services can be tapped on.

It is ideal and practical that you work with people that you are familiar with not only in terms of behavior but with what they can bring to the table. In lieu with this you have to acknowledge the fact that policies have different rules so be sure to check if your trusted vet can be part of the insurance plan. Otherwise you have to coordinate with him on what is best to be done.

You have to make it a point that you know each detail of the policy especially the waiting period that accompanies it. Policies have different waiting periods that signify the time span on which it comes into effect as well as the time when that effect ends. Exclusions should also be given proper notice as they will surely affect the level of benefits your pet can receive. Hereditary defects are common exclusion found in health plans. Additional costs are commonly asked for to cover common exclusions.

Make sure that you get what you paid for especially for cases of comprehensive plans. Prescription coverage is an important aspect of pet care as it may be needed in times that medicine is demanded for the care of your pet. Prescriptions can also be used to readily access various means of pet care and treatment. Neutering and spaying is also relevant as it involves issues of population that may seriously affect the growth and development of your pets.

Certainly an increase in their number is proportional to the nourishment needs that they will demand. It may be an annoying repetition but the need to check for the involvement of dental care, heartworm testing, and immunization is important to make the policy work in full gear for your pet.

The variation in health plans will also dictate differences in deductibles. Now a deductible is an important concept since it is the amount that needs to be covered before actual service can be carried out therefore you should make it a point to consider economic restrictions that may involve a certain plans deductible. It is common knowledge that the lesser the deductible you have would make your monthly premium higher.

Above all before closing a deal for a pet insurance it is very important that you feel the right vibe with the company. Make sure that all your questions are answered so that there is no doubt that everything is covered properly.

Reading between active and passive 3d glasses

Reading Between Active and Passive 3D Glasses

In your 3D viewing experience, there are some things that should always be part of the experience. Include your 3D glasses in the list- the viewing experience without these glasses cannot be complete. Now glasses don't come in one package; these glasses come in different forms and styles and can come with different technologies. For technology-driven glasses there are two types of glasses worth considering- the passive 3D glasses and the Active glasses. The difference between the two or similarities if any are discussed below

The things going for Passive 3D glasses

When you say passive 3D glasses, this mean that these glasses will not need a power source in order for you to enjoy the experience. Expect two sub-types for the passive glasses, and these are the polarized glasses and the anaglyph. Often, the main reason for selecting this type of glasses is that this is cheaper as compared to the other type. This type does not require power, thus making this the in-expensive choice for many.

Take the case of the anaglyph glasses. These glasses often come in one red and one cyan lens, and the main material is cardboard. Using these types of glasses is fun, but not as good if compared to other forms of glasses. And since this is made from cardboard, then you can say that this is the least advanced in terms of technologies from among 3D glasses. There are polarized glasses too under the passive category. These glasses can be lumped as linear polarized and the circular polarized.

Why settle for Active Glasses

For more sophistication and better viewing experience, often the recommendation is to go for active 3D glasses. These are the glasses that are now commercially-produced and these will require a power source. And for the emerging technology, the shutter glasses are the ones often considered for viewing 3D content.

There was a time when glasses used for the 3D viewing experience are connected by wires to the power source. But due to the need for convenience, these shutter and active glasses are now powered by batteries. And since there are a lot of things going for these types of glasses, expect to pay a hefty sum. Most of these glasses are sold from $50 to more than $100 depending on the manufacturer. The good news is that the moment you buy a 3D television, you will be provided with a pair of these glasses. But if you want an extra, then you have to pay the said amount.

It's not all good for these glasses; active 3D glasses have its own share of flaws too. One flaw is that the separate images for both eyes are not delivered at the same time. There will be an alternate delivery of the images. These glasses are still in active development, and corrective actions are being taken. Right now, for the best viewing experience the shutter glasses from leading manufacturers are being recommended. These shutter glasses are made for 3D and made to promote better 3D viewing experience.

Reading and interpretation of body language

Reading And Interpretation Of Body Language

Consciously or unconsciously, humans can send and receive messages through body language. It is a form of nonverbal communication, which mainly involves gestures using the different parts of the body. It would truly be an advantage if you know how to read and interpret another person's body language for the very reason that you can determine his or her mood, expressions, and desires.

There are several gestures that a person uses in different specific situations at work, in a job interview, dinner date, or even in a casual conversation. The eyes, arms, and hands are the body parts frequently used to communicate, even unconsciously.

Eye Language

Eye contact is the most powerful language using the eyes. It have different meanings. It can indicate mistrust from another person when he cannot take his eyes off the speaker, or it may mean that the person has a positive outlook or interest on what the speaker is saying. In instances that a person would look from one eye to another then another area, there are different interpretations as well.

Movement from one eye to another then to the forehead indicates that the person is looking at authoritative figure. Another instance is when the person would look from one eye to the other then to the nose, this means that there are no level of superiority in either party. The last case indicates a sign of romance or attraction when the person would look from one eye to another then down to the lips.

However, the eyes can be misleading, especially if there are other gestures accompanying it. Despite direct eye contact, when the person you are speaking to is still fiddling something with his hands, it means that is mind is elsewhere but you. If he is looking at you but with the arms crossed, it indicates signs of bother or defense from you. Another case is when there is eye contact but the head is slightly tilted. This indicates boredom. Lies can be spotted as well when there is excessive blinking and no eye contact.

Crossed Arms

Arms crossed across the chest is one of the most powerful and basic gestures used by anyone. One can form a barrier between himself and another person by crossing his arms, or it may simply mean that he feels cold. It can also indicate as a protection or defense in nervous or anxious situations.

When you are talking to someone and he would cross his arms, it means that he opposes, suspects, or doubts what you are saying. But if he is talking with his arms crossed, it means that he may be nervous, lying, or hiding something from you.

Hand Movements

The pockets are never the right place to put your hands into. A person with his hands in the pocket may indicate that he is nervous, uncomfortable, bored, or uninterested. This gesture indicates also that he may be hiding something from you or he doesn't want to engage in a specific activity or task.

An open palm means sincerity or honesty. A clenched fist is a very clear indication of frustration, anger, resistance, and defense. But there are times wherein it indicates confidence in one's idea or opinion. Nervousness or anxiousness is seen in someone who is tapping or twitching his fingers. Rubbing of hands, meanwhile, may indicate extreme excitement or cold feeling.

Read another person by reading his body language. One's actions definitely have more honesty compared to the words coming out from his mouth.

Reading activity for kindergarten

Reading Activity For Kindergarten

A natural progression in your reading activities with your children is that after you read them to a passage from the story; have them paraphrase the story back to you.

homeschool, homeschooling, teach your child, child education, teach at home, home school, homeschool curriculum

As a homeschooler one of the most important tasks for you to accomplish in your child at an early age is getting them interested in and developing good reading habits. At an early age learning to recognize letters, the sounds they make and words they eventually form should be an activity and not a structured assignment. A great reading activity for kindergarten aged children, for example is to read to them.

A natural progression in your reading activities with your children is that after you read them to a passage from the story; have them paraphrase the story back to you. This will help you to understand what level of listening ability and understanding they are at, as well has help them to begin building their vocabulary as they work to find new words they can use with their description of the story they are giving back to you.

Good reading activities dont always have to occur at the house, or just before bedtime. While youre running errands around town or on vacation, perhaps have the kids begin t
